SDG 1

SDG Goal 13

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

Why is this significant?

The world is on the brink of a climate catastrophe, and current actions and plans to address the crisis are insufficient. Without immediate and transformative action to deeply and rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions in all sectors, the 1.5°C target will be at risk, endangering the lives of more than 3 billion people. Failure to act will lead to intensified heatwaves, droughts, flooding, wildfires, sea-level rise, and famines. The rate of sea-level rise has doubled in the last decade, posing a significant threat to coastal regions. Highly vulnerable areas are experiencing mortality rates from disasters that are 15 times higher than more resilient regions. By 2030, emissions must be reduced almost by half, which is a daunting task to be achieved in just six years. Urgent and transformative action is needed to fulfill the commitments under the Paris Agreement, encompassing both mitigation and adaptation efforts. In 2019-2020, global climate finance flows reached an annual average of $803 billion. However, developing countries require nearly $6 trillion by 2030 to effectively address climate change. To combat climate change and its impacts by 2030, it is essential to prioritize immediate measures such as transitioning to renewable energy sources, implementing sustainable practices, improving energy efficiency, investing in climate-resilient infrastructure, and mobilizing sufficient financial resources to support developing countries.

Targets

  • 13.1 Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries
  • 13.2 Integrate climate change measures into national policies, strategies and planning
  • 13.3 Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning
  • 13.a Implement the commitment undertaken by developed-country parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to a goal of mobilizing jointly $100 billion annually by 2020 from all sources to address the needs of developing countries in the context of meaningful mitigation actions and transparency on implementation and fully operationalize the Green Climate Fund through its capitalization as soon as possible
  • 13.b Promote mechanisms for raising capacity for effective climate change-related planning and management in least developed countries and small island developing States, including focusing on women, youth and local and marginalized communities
