SDG Goal 16
Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels
Why is this significant?
The number of civilian deaths resulting from conflicts has experienced a sharp increase, with a surge of over 50% in 2022, primarily driven by the war in Ukraine. In 2021, intentional homicides reached their highest level in 20 years, resulting in the loss of 458,000 lives. Approximately one-quarter of the global population resides in areas affected by conflict, and as of May 2022, a record-breaking 100 million individuals were forcibly displaced worldwide, more than double the number from a decade ago. It is crucial to note that the actual number of trafficking victims is likely much higher than the nearly 200,000 detected worldwide between 2017 and 2020, as many cases go undetected.
In addition, structural injustices, inequalities, and emerging human rights challenges are further hindering the achievement of peaceful and inclusive societies. Restoring trust and enhancing the capacity of institutions to ensure justice for all and facilitate sustainable development transitions are essential actions needed to address these issues.
